Our first project article is dedicated to the Tomb Kings. We’ll be sharing a series of posts focused on the building of our army, with a particular emphasis on the Sentinels, a faction from Total War: Warhammer known as the fierce defenders of Nagash’s Black Pyramid.
Like many others, we welcomed the return of Warhammer Fantasy Battle with great excitement. The initial announcements had us absolutely thrilled.
But that excitement quickly turned to disappointment: for us, visual quality is key, and the re-release of kits that are over 20 years old felt like a letdown. While we’re genuinely happy to see some classic metal miniatures make a comeback—bringing undeniable old-school charm at prices far below the second-hand market—many of the reissued plastic kits unfortunately fall short of modern standards in sculpting, especially considering what Games Workshop is capable of today.
These outdated plastic kits definitely cooled our enthusiasm for the Tomb Kings project.
The new proportions used in recent releases make some older miniatures look extremely small by comparison. The Liche Priest, for example, does have a certain classic appeal in its sculpt, but once assembled, its proportions feel outdated and awkward.
To work around these legacy models, we decided to turn to 3D printing, especially to replace the more antiquated kits. While the Bone Dragon kit remains an excellent surprise, we were honestly hoping for a more comprehensive update of the plastic regiments – something like two new heroes and two new units would have been a solid starting point.
That said, the release of Grand Cathay has reassured us about The Old World’s artistic direction, and the recent announcement of new plastic characters for the Tomb Kings gives us hope once again. We’re now looking forward to a gradual refresh of the range, with all-new sculpts and a more consistent release rhythm.
We’ll be starting modestly, with an initial 1000-point army list, as a way to ease ourselves back into the world of Warhammer: The Old World.
Army List – 1000 Points
Heroes:
- High Priest (on foot) – Level 2 in Necromancy, hand weapon, Dispel Scroll.
- Prince Ophtos II – Flail, light armor, shield, Mask of Kharnutt, Crown of Kings.
Core Units:
- 19 Skeleton Warriors – Hand weapons, light armor, shields, Champion, Standard Bearer.
- 20 Skeleton Warriors – Same equipment, Champion, Standard Bearer.
- 3 Skeleton Chariots – Hand weapons, cavalry lances, bows, Champion, Standard Bearer, Musician.
- 20 Skeleton Archers – Bows, hand weapons, Master of Arrows – [105 pts]
Special Units:
- 19 Tomb Guard – Halberds, light armor, shields, full command.
This project is still in its early stages, and we’ll likely be making adjustments as we go. However, this gives us a solid foundation on which to build our army. While it’s not a priority project, we’ll be publishing occasional updates – lore articles, painting logs, and progress galleries.
