Hello everyone,
Today, we’re continuing our series of content from our StarCraft playtest group with a painting tutorial by Ludoredguard. He set himself an ambitious challenge: to paint his entire army at record speed, without sacrificing visual impact. The result is an original color scheme, quite unusual for the StarCraft universe, but one that works extremely well on the tabletop.
In this article, Ludoredguard shares his method and “recipe” for recreating this look. The goal is simple: to offer a tutorial that is accessible, quick to execute, and easy to reproduce, even for beginner painters. Of course, this base can then be developed further depending on your skill level and preferences, more advanced highlights, lighting effects, battle damage… it’s up to you to make the scheme your own.
Here are the main steps used for the army’s core colors, all applied over a black undercoat.
1. Armor
Base: Dark Grey (Prince August)
Wash: Dark Tone (Army Painter)
Highlight: Dark Grey (Prince August)
Edge Highlight (Lining): London Grey (Vallejo)
2. Orange
Base: Red Leather (Vallejo)
Layer: 50/50 mix of Red Leather (Vallejo) + Light Red (Prince August)
Highlight: Pure Light Red (Prince August)
Edge Highlight (Lining): 50/50 mix of Light Red + Matt Yellow (Prince August)
3. Metals
Base: Iron Warriors (Citadel)
Wash: Black
Highlight: Ironbreaker (Citadel)
4. Base
Base: Flat Brown (Vallejo)
Drybrush: 50/50 mix of Flat Brown (Vallejo) + Iraqi Sand (Prince August)
Drybrush: Iraqi Sand (Prince August)
Here is the final result! Feel free to share your own creations in the comments, whether you followed the tutorial step by step or added your own personal twist. We would be delighted to see your armies and your variations of this color scheme.
We’ll be back very soon with a showcase of the rest of the army, as well as more wargaming content!
