Project Cities of Sigmar : Greywater Fastness

Hello everyone,

Here is our very first article truly dedicated to Age of Sigmar. About ten years ago, we were passionate Warhammer Fantasy Battle players. We took part in the Albion campaign, the Storm of Chaos, and even the End Times. The arrival, let’s say… clumsy, of Age of Sigmar definitely put us off at first, mainly due to history that was still vague in its early stages and the lack of a points system to balance armies. Despite that, we kept an eye on the game as it evolved over the editions. And, seeing all the improvements that have been made, the desire to start new army projects slowly took hold again. Unfortunately, as is often the case, many of those projects were left on hold, with some boxes ending up on the back of the shelf in favor of other priorities. So it was time to change that.

With the latest edition of Age of Sigmar, the Spearhead mode really motivated us. As former Empire players from the Old World, we instantly fell in love with the release of the Cities of Sigmar box. We then completed its contents with the missing miniatures to field a full force in Spearhead format.

Although the first Spearhead box has since been replaced by a new version, we still have all the necessary rules to keep playing with it. The advantage is that we’ll then be able to move on to the second Spearhead box to further expand our army, diversify our strategies, and maybe even step beyond the Spearhead format into more traditional, large-scale games.

We chose the Greywater Fastness sub-faction, drawn in by both its striking and original yellow color scheme, and its lore, which strongly echoes the city of Nuln from the Old World. That nostalgic nod really spoke to us. We’re especially excited about this first Spearhead force thanks to the inclusion of cavalry and a cannon. These are absolutely stunning kits, full of detail, and we can’t wait to paint them and see them in action on the battlefield.

We’ll be using the official color scheme as inspiration (see above), but with a personal twist. To begin with, we’re focusing on the cavalry, which will be the centerpiece of our next article. Our goal is to give this army a springtime atmosphere—we’ll incorporate flowers and grasses in various colors to evoke vibrant, lively landscapes. We imagine this force as a roving patrol, traveling through the surrounding countryside to defend the region from any threats to the fortress of Greywater. Their relationship with the Sylvaneth is particularly tense, which doesn’t make their mission any easier… Not to mention the ever-present threat of Chaos incursions, or the undead lurking in the shadows.

The atmosphere we want to create with our basing evokes a patrol venturing far beyond the city walls, into areas where nature is slowly reclaiming the land. The immediate surroundings of Greywater Fastness are heavily polluted by the city’s intense industrial activity, thick smoke, barren soil, and tainted rivers. One has to travel quite a distance to find green, living landscapes again. This force operates precisely in that border zone, where civilization meets untamed nature, a region where every grove could conceal a Sylvaneth ambush.

With this, we’ve established a clear narrative foundation and defined our goals. See you very soon in a new article dedicated to this faction!

    1. We’re starting our army with a Spearhead, as a solid foundation. It’s clearly our favourite faction in Age of Sigmar, and we fully intend to expand it with many more units.

The diversity of races perfectly reflects the identity of this army. Since Greywater Fastness is an industrial city, including duardins feels entirely fitting, even natural.

As for the aelves, we’re still considering our options. A small contingent might be included, though their tense relationship with the Sylvaneth calls for a consistent narrative, something we plan to explore further.

In fact, we’ll be developing the lore of this army over the course of future articles, to deepen its identity and bring more meaning to each unit choice.
