Hello everyone,

Today, we are proud to present our very first Index Astartes article, dedicated to the Imperial Harbingers Chapter, which you may also recognize from our ongoing army painting project. As is often the case, this Index is accompanied by an Steel & Tracks article devoted to the Chapter, exploring both its identity, history, and battlefield aesthetic.

Since the official lore surrounding the Imperial Harbingers is particularly limited, we chose to expand and enrich their background using the few canonical elements available, while remaining as faithful as possible to the universe of Warhammer 40,000. We hope you will enjoy this interpretation and creative work as much as we enjoyed bringing it to life.

A mysterious Chapter created during the 23rd Founding, the Imperial Harbingers roam the galaxy relentlessly, hunting renegades and the enemies of the Imperium who dare defy the Emperor’s decrees. Organized into several constantly moving crusade fleets, the Chapter possesses no fixed home world and wages an eternal war among the stars.

Over the millennia, the Imperial Harbingers have become specialists in void warfare, boarding operations, and orbital engagements. Because their way of war forces them to remain in space for extended periods of time, their training is exceptionally rigorous, designed to counter the harmful effects of artificial gravity systems and preserve the physical condition of every battle-brother.

This rigorous discipline has forged exceptionally resilient warriors, capable of operating within the most hostile environments of the void. In the earliest days of the Chapter’s creation, the Imperial Harbingers became the target of the Death Guard, who sought to annihilate the young Chapter before it could firmly establish itself. The battle that followed descended into unimaginable brutality, as the pestilent weapons of Nurgle’s servants literally caused the bodies and armor of many loyalist Space Marines to liquefy. Although victory ultimately belonged to the Imperium, the conflict left a permanent scar upon the soul of the Chapter. Since that day, the Imperial Harbingers have harbored a burning hatred for the worshippers of the Plague God and sworn vengeance for their fallen brothers.

Forever hunting across the galaxy, the Chapter has earned an enviable reputation for its mastery of warp navigation and orbital warfare. Under the command of their current Chapter Master, Dienek Arrianos, the Imperial Harbingers deployed the entirety of their forces following the opening of the Great Rift in order to contain the countless enemy vessels emerging from empyric anomalies. Today, the Chapter’s fleets are scattered across the galaxy, patrolling the length of the Cicatrix Maledictum to stem the tides of Chaos incursions and keep the Imperium’s routes open.

Constantly on the move, the Chapter recruits its aspirants from local populations encountered at the conclusion of each military campaign. This nomadic method of recruitment has given rise to a remarkably diverse culture in which only discipline, faith in the Emperor, and duty to the Chapter truly matter. The integration of Primaris Space Marines was accepted without hesitation by the Imperial Harbingers. Immediately recognizing the strategic and martial value of these new warriors, several Primaris contingents were swiftly assigned to the Chapter’s various crusade fleets, further strengthening their ability to respond rapidly across the galaxy.

Equipment:

The Imperial Harbingers wear light grey armour, a symbol of their austerity and of their long existence within the void of space. Despite their unwavering loyalty to the Imperium, the Chapter follows the precepts of the Codex Astartes established by Roboute Guilliman with a notable degree of flexibility and adaptation.

The various combat companies are primarily distinguished by the colour of their helmets, each company bearing its own unique and identifiable hue. This colour scheme may also be found on certain armour panels, most notably knee plates and ceremonial markings. Veterans and officers of the Chapter often further personalise their wargear with more elaborate designs—checker patterns, geometric bands, or honour markings—displaying their rank, deeds, and long service within the Chapter.

The symbol of the Imperial Harbingers depicts a flaming side-profile skull, an embodiment of the relentless destruction they bring upon the enemies of the Emperor. Tactical markings are typically displayed in black on the right shoulder pad, though their colour may vary depending on the rank or battlefield role of the Space Marine.

Due to their warfare doctrine focused on void operations, the Imperial Harbingers maintain a particularly vast and powerful fleet. Each company is assigned its own battle barge, supported by numerous strike cruisers, escorts, and auxiliary vessels capable of sustaining long campaigns far from Imperial worlds. This strategic autonomy allows the Chapter to maintain a constant presence along the most dangerous routes of the galaxy.

Their arsenal has naturally evolved to meet the demands of boarding actions and close-quarters engagements within enemy vessels. Melta weapons are widely used throughout the Chapter, employed to breach armoured bulkheads and carve openings through tightly confined corridors. Intercessor squads often favour automatic bolters for sustained close-range combat, while other formations are equipped with melee weapons designed for brutal engagements in the claustrophobic environments of shipboard warfare.

The Imperial Harbingers also field numerous Bladeguard Veteran squads, specialists in disciplined and methodical advances during boarding operations. Protected by their heavy storm shields and unyielding discipline, they form the spearhead of the most perilous assaults. In support, Terminator squads are frequently held in reserve, ready to be teleported directly into the heart of the fighting once the enemy shows the first signs of disruption or weakness.

Notable Campaigns:

The Purge of Ilium [744.M39]:

The 2nd and 4th Companies of Imperial Harbingers joined forces with Accipiter, Adjudicator and Tauran combat units during the Purge of Ilium conflict. This assault force had support from several regiments of the Coban guards of the Astra Militarum. The objective was to lay siege to the Hollow Blades fortress planet. A small group of Iron Warrior renegades had fortified various strategic positions on the planet, and in its orbit, with a view to plundering neighboring systems. In order to organize a coordinated attack, Captain Kleitos of the 2nd Company of Imperial Harbingers took command of the operation. Rebel orbital stations came under attack from the Adjudicators and the Imperial Harbingers at the same time as Accipiters, Taurans and Astra Militarum were detailed to invade and secure the planet. Although many spaceships suffered serious damage during space combat, their artillery maintained constant fire on the heavily-defended docks. The sustained attack created breaches, forcing the defenders to focus on protecting the structure’s strategic areas.Capitalizing on this hasty reorganization, Terminators from the two chapters teleported into the heart of the orbital station, wreaking havoc where enemy troops were at their most vulnerable. Several of these squads grouped together after securing their targets, attacking the most heavily-armed zones and thus creating more disorder among the last pockets of resistance. The pacification of the docks increased the number of landing zones for the assault on the planet. The Imperium’s attack forces began purging each fortified point in turn, making their way towards the Hollow Blades region. Daemon Engines rained down on the ranks of the Astra Militarum, sowing panic among Imperial guards. Although regrettable, this sacrifice enabled Reiver squads to penetrate the fortress. These infiltration specialists sabotaged the defense systems of the doors of this huge, fortified structure, enabling the attackers to pour into the bastion. After several months of barbarism, Ilium was once again under the yoke of the Imperium. Captain Kleitos was honored for his strategic and martial services and, ever since, the 2nd Company of Imperial Harbingers has included a symbol of a destroyed fortress on its standard.

The Tyberian Crusade [481.M40]:

The 2nd Company of Imperial Harbingers was assigned to the Tyberian Crusade. Captain Kleitos commanded his troops jointly with Lord Commander Lucellin Tyberius. The mission was to stem the exponential growth of the Maghakrush’a Ork Empire within the heart of the Ultima Segmentum. Having been the first chapter of Space Marines present during this campaign, the arrival of the Imperial Harbingers on the battlefield provided an invaluable boost to the morale of Astra Militarum soldiers, and they upped their combat game considerably afterwards. Tyberius was amazed by such enthusiasm and put in an urgent request for back-up from other Space Marine chapters so they could work their magic in the crucial sectors of the campaign. Although these reinforcements took some time to arrive, the Imperial forces held out well against the hoards of greenskins. Imperial Guards fighting alongside Space Marines took back several sectors from enemy hands. As the campaign continued and the victories piled up, so Tyberius’s ego swelled beyond reason. Believing himself invincible, he launched a series of disastrous attacks, leading, in particular, to the death of Captain Kleitos. Following this tragic loss, the 2nd Company withdrew from the operation on orders of the Grand Master himself so that a new captain could be named and Tyberius punished for his tactical failure and his arrogance. Although this campaign was tragic for the Imperial Harbingers, it concluded with an Imperial victory. On his death, Lucellin Tyberius’s dominating personality and knowledge of tactics and strategy were cybernetically preserved in his gold-plated skull. This relic, named the Tactical Auto-Reliquary of Tyberius, states that victories trump facts. The Imperial Harbingers felt insulted when this artefact was created and swore to carry out their own campaigns from then on and never again find themselves under the command of anyone other than their own officers.

The Second Tyrannic War [997.M41]:

Deployment of the 7th Company against the Hive Fleet Kraken near the planet Ichar IV, holding the line while awaiting the arrival of Imperial reinforcements.

The Thirteenth Black Crusade [999.M41]:

The 4th Company was decimated during its defense of Belis Corona. Greatly weakened, the troops were replaced by Primaris, so they would be able to participate in reconquering Imperial space as quickly as possible.

Notable Character:

Chapter Master Dienek Arrianos

Dienek Arrianos is the current Chapter Master of the Imperial Harbingers and one of the greatest void-warfare strategists of his time. Born on the frontier worlds of the Segmentum Obscurus, Arrianos was recruited following a pacification campaign led by the Chapter’s 5th Company against Aeldari pirates infesting Imperial trade routes. From his earliest days as a neophyte, he stood out for his relentless discipline, exceptional physical endurance, and remarkable grasp of naval tactics. Assigned to the Chapter’s Scout forces, he took part in numerous infiltration and boarding operations against heretical vessels. His ability to operate within confined shipboard environments, combined with his composure in close-quarters combat, quickly drew the attention of his superiors. After his ascension to full Space Marine status, Arrianos served for nearly two centuries across several crusade companies, refining his mastery of warfare in the depths of the void.

It was during the Khymara Gate campaign that he earned lasting renown within the Chapter. Then a mere Sergeant, he led a small force of Intercessors and Bladeguard Veterans in the boarding action of the renegade cruiser Profanator Rex, the flagship of a heretical fleet affiliated with the Word Bearers. Despite heavy losses, Arrianos managed to reach the enemy command sanctum and personally executed the Chaos Lord Varkul Theon. The destruction of the vessel prevented several Imperial systems from an imminent daemon invasion. For this feat, he was promoted to Captain of the 5th Company.

In the centuries that followed, Dienek Arrianos built his reputation upon a doctrine of warfare based on mobility, precision strikes, and orbital superiority. Unlike many Space Marine commanders who favour frontal assaults, Arrianos preferred the gradual attrition of the enemy through constant raids, sabotage operations, and lightning strikes launched from the void. This approach enabled the Imperial Harbingers to win numerous campaigns against forces that were often vastly superior in number.

When the previous Chapter Master disappeared during an expedition into the Warp near the Cicatrix Maledictum, the Council of Captains appointed Arrianos as his successor. His experience in void warfare and mastery of empyric routes made him the most obvious choice in a galaxy now fractured by the Great Rift. Under his command, the Imperial Harbingers were dispersed into multiple autonomous fleets tasked with securing Imperial supply lines, protecting isolated worlds, and containing Chaos incursions emerging from Warp storms. Arrianos also ordered a sweeping modernisation of the Chapter’s tactics, rapidly integrating Primaris Space Marines into existing formations to preserve the mobility and striking power of the crusading forces.

Although regarded as a cold and highly demanding commander, Dienek Arrianos inspires deep respect among his battle-brothers. He consistently shares the dangers of the front line with his warriors and frequently leads the most perilous boarding operations in person. His power armour, known as the Veil of Judgment, still bears the scars of countless wars fought against renegades and Chaos worshippers.
