We had been eyeing the A Song of Ice and Fire game for quite some time. After having some plenty of feedback, watching a few battles at our local gaming club, and seeing the TV series, we finally decided to take the plunge.
After some thought, we settled on a simple project to avoid spreading ourselves too thin. We decided to focus, at least initially, on a classic battle between House Stark and House Lannister, nothing too exotic, but perfectly fitting with the lore. To get started, we picked up a starter set of each of the two factions, and we’re kicking things off with House Stark.
Our goal for each army is to build a 40 points force using as much as possible from the starter boxes. We’ll add units in a focused way, trying not to branch out too much, especially given the uncertain future of the publisher, CMON. Some products are already hard to find or take a long time to be shipped. We’re hoping the situation improves, especially since we’re among the backers of the upcoming A Song of Ice and Fire skirmish game… but that’s a story for another day.
Strategically, this project is still in its early stages. We’ve barely skimmed through the rules of A Song of Ice and Fire (ASOIAF), and we still need to dive deeper in order to build our army list. Our current foundation is the starter set, which allowed us to kick off the painting project. However, we weren’t particularly impressed by the quality of the miniatures.
Although the sculpts are decent, the casting material and level of detail didn’t really inspire us to paint them ourselves. So we decided to start a collaboration to bring this project to life with a result we probably wouldn’t have been able to achieve on our own. Given the number of miniatures we have, being able to delegate certain projects when its possible is truly a relief. For this project, we’re pleased to be working with Unlimited Colours studio. You can already admire their work on the Karstark Spearmen, painted to their level 3 standard.
We’ll be back very soon with updates on our Stark project, once we’ve fully gone through the rules and finalized our army list. Along with that, we’ll be sharing more miniatures painted by the talented Unlimited Colours studio.
