Hello everyone,

We’re back with a new review of Games Workshop previews. It was clear that we shouldn’t expect many new Warhammer 40,000 reveals during this showcase, as the so-called Armageddon campaign is currently ongoing. New Ork and Space Marine releases will be unveiled gradually as the campaign progresses.

Starter sets

Following the launch of Armageddon, Games Workshop is presenting the different bundles for this new edition.

These boxes look genuinely appealing for beginners. The bundle containing two armies and terrain is particularly attractive, although owners of the Armageddon box may not necessarily be convinced due to potential duplicate miniatures.

We are looking at a box with slightly fewer miniatures, but compensated by the addition of terrain. Let’s hope the price does not exceed €200, which would make it a very solid starter set and a strong value proposition for new players.

The Discovery set features completely new Ork sculpts, which is likely to frustrate collectors. Indeed, many will be tempted to buy this box purely for the miniatures (which will of course be our case!), as they are an excellent way to diversify their units.

The cardboard terrain, why not, even if we are clearly not huge fans of this type of content. Once again, let’s hope the price will not be excessive compared to what is included.

A minor frustration: the paint starter sets. Once again, they include exclusive miniatures that differ from those found in other boxes. On the Space Marine side, there is nothing particularly remarkable, as the Intercessors are fairly standard. In contrast, the Orks get two Boyz as well as an exclusive Gretchin. Enough, once again, to make players want to pick up the set purely to expand and diversify their units.

This is a rather clever strategy from Games Workshop: collectors generally do not need the paints included in these sets, but the exclusive miniatures are often enough to tempt them. A smart way to encourage even already-equipped players to spend a little more.

Finally, the new terrain pieces will soon be available in various unpainted sets, including one specifically designed for the Combat Patrol format.

A pre-painted version of the same terrain will also be released later on. The result looks genuinely high-quality, although the pricing will, once again, be something to watch closely. These versions could prove highly competitive for players who usually rely on painting services, particularly for basic commissions. In the end, they might even offer a higher level of detail for a lower overall cost.

We will therefore have to wait for release to form a definitive opinion. On our side, we remain of course in favour of unpainted terrain, which offers far more freedom in terms of customisation and variety. That said, this second option is perfectly understandable and will undoubtedly find its audience.

Other goodies, such as gaming mats, will also be available, but we will not dwell on them, as our main interest clearly lies in the miniatures.

The Orks

Surprisingly, new Ork releases were revealed, starting with an excellent redesign of the Trukk. It remains fully compatible with the previous version, which is great news for players looking to expand their vehicle roster without creating a visual mismatch. It is also worth noting that the kit will offer multiple build options, as well as a crew scaled appropriately to the new Ork models.

Another welcome redesign is the Mek, which finally looks like a proper character, unlike its previous rather generic version.

The army will be accompanied by a 170-page codex, which we hope will help make up for the content lost in recent editions. We are also looking forward to seeing what further releases this army will bring.

In parallel, the kits from Armageddon, which will not receive alternative versions beyond those included in the box, will also be released separately.

We did not expect an extraordinary reveal for this game system, but we remain satisfied with what is shaping up.

We’ll be back very soon with further articles covering this reveal in more detail across the different game system categories.
