Death Guard Project : Arch-Contaminators List

Hello everyone,

This time, we’re getting straight to the point with an army list designed to be played with Boarding Actions supplement. However, we encountered a slight hiccup due to the evolution of 10th Edition : the list will not be at 500 points as stated in the book, but 565 points, due to the latest point cost updates. Of course, this points adjustment has been approved by our future opponents to ensure a fair and enjoyable game for everyone.

Also, one miniature has been removed from the official range since the v10 codex update. We hadn’t initially intended to include it in our list, as the model was really old. In this article, you’ll find the army list, pictures of the miniatures (feel free to click to see them in detail), as well as an analysis of the Arch-Contaminators detachment from the Boarding Actions supplement.

Here is our army list (565 points):

  • Lord of Virulence (100 pts)
  • Lord of Contagion (120 pts)
  • Blightlord Terminators (185 pts)
  • Deathshroud Terminators (160 pts)

This list will, of course, take center stage in our very first battle report, which we’ll publish as soon as the opposing army has been introduced.

Analysis of the Arch-Contaminators Detachment:

The Arch-Contaminators detachment represents the elite of the Death Guard : heavily armored Terminator units that are extremely durable (Toughness 6, Save 2+/4++, 3+ Wounds), but slow (Movement 4″). It’s a low-model-count detachment, but incredibly resilient on the defensive front.

Detachment Rule : Inescapable Corruption

If an enemy unit is selected to perform a Tactical Manoeuvre, within the Contagion Range of a Death Guard unit (The core army mechanic), it must take a Leadership test. If the test fails, that Tactical Manoeuvre has no effect. This rule offers a clear strategic edge and can seriously disrupt enemy plans.

Additionally, during your Command phase, roll one D6 for each objective marker that is within Contagion Range of one or more units from your army and is Secured by your opponent’s army : on a 5+, that objective marker is no longer Secured by your opponent’s army. While not 100% reliable, this second rule can strip objectives of their secured status, even through walls, which can turn the tide in the final moments of the game.

Army Composition:

You can include two characters from the following list (no duplicates):

  • Typhus
  • Terminator Sorcerer (a strong ranged option and very cost-efficient, but since he has been removed from the 10th Edition Codex, we’ve set it aside)
  • Lord of Contagion (great in melee)
  • Lord of Virulence (focused on shooting)

And one of each of the following unit choices:

  • Blightlord Terminators (unit of 5)
  • Deathshroud Terminators (unit of 3)
  • Chaos Spawn (unit of 2)

The Blightlord Terminators can capture objectives as if they had the Battleline keyword – a huge strategic advantage.

Detachment Enhancements:

  • Miasmic Odour
: Add 3″ to the Contagion Range of the bearer. Very useful for activating bonuses earlier in the game.
  • Disgusting Reinvigoration : Each time the bearer destroys an enemy model with a melee attack, roll one D6 : on a 5+, the bearer regains one lost wound (to a maximum of two lost wounds per phase). Honestly, quite situational.

Also, don’t hesitate to look into the generic Death Guard Enhancements, some of them are definitely worth using.

Stratagems:

Allies of Entropy (1 CP) :  Until the end of the phase, each time a model in your unit is destroyed, if that model has not fought this phase, roll one D6: on a 4+, do not remove the destroyed model from play; it can fight after the attacking unit has finished making its attacks, and is then removed from play. A solid deterrent against enemy melee units.

Seeds of Corruption (1 CP) : If your unit was set up on the battlefield this turn, it can perform a Tactical Manoeuvre this phase as if it was not set up on the battlefield this turn. Situational, but can be very effective.

Corrosive Curse (1 CP, once per battle) :Select one objective marker within Contagion Range  of and visible to your unit. That objective marker is Secured by your army. You can only use this Stratagem once and, until the end of the turn, your unit is not eligible to shoot or declare a charge. Useful for grabbing points early or in a pinch.

Cloud of Flies (1 CP): Until the end of the turn, each time an attack targets your unit, subtract 1 from the Hit roll. Further improves the already strong durability of your units, especially against high-volume attacks.

Gameplay Tips :

The main challenge for your army is its slow movement, you’ll need to push forward aggressively and control objective zones as early as possible.

Using the Blightlord Terminators in combination with the Corrosive Curse stratagem at the start of the game can allow you to secure objectives quickly, despite your army’s lack of speed.

Anticipating your opponent’s strategy will be key because losing control of objectives due to poor positioning can cost you the game.

Conclusion :

The Arch-Contaminators detachment is an excellent choice for fielding a highly resilient, elite force, but you need to be prepared to deal with its lack of mobility.

Thanks to its corruption effects and concentrated power, it can control the board effectively in Boarding Actions.
