StarCraft: The Adventure at the Heart of the Beta

Hello everyone,

We’ve had the chance to access the ongoing beta of the game StarCraft developed by Archon Studio. Initially selected to test the rules, we were also able, thanks to our association, to get our hands on the miniatures as well as the companion app. Regarding these specific elements, we will remain deliberately vague due to the confidentiality agreement. However, we can discuss the rules currently available on the various Discord servers dedicated to the game.

Overall, the rules are quick to read and fairly accessible. Some points still need clarification or correction, but the community, made up of around fifty testing groups, is particularly active. Adjustments have already been made, and the system’s evolution is clearly visible through ongoing feedback.

As for the miniatures, there is little to criticize: they are simple, clean, well-cast, and free of poorly detailed areas. The transparent elements are a nice and original addition; however, their usefulness remains somewhat limited outside of specific cases (unpainted miniatures or concealed units). Still, it’s an interesting aesthetic choice.

In terms of gameplay, the game is quick to learn and becomes smooth after a few matches, which is quite appreciable for a wargame of this scale. We are genuinely looking forward to discovering the final version of the rules, once the grey areas have been clarified and the last adjustments implemented.

It is still difficult to fully assess the depth of the game, as the available unit entries are currently limited. However, the gameplay potential is clearly there, and the mechanics remain faithful to the original StarCraft video game. The main question concerns balance: with only three races featuring iconic and well-known units, one might fear a meta that becomes repetitive. Will a “bioball” dominate in the long run? It’s hard to say at this stage. Only time and greater list diversity will provide clearer answers. In any case, the game appears promising and remains accessible, even for players who are not particularly experienced with wargames.

Between assembly, playtesting, and detailed feedback, our week has been quite busy! We’re now eager to test the game under final conditions, with the official markers, terrain, and miniatures from the range.

We will undoubtedly be back very soon with more articles dedicated to the game. It’s truly galvanizing to experience such a project in its early stages, with real involvement in shaping the final outcome. It may well be the kind of experience one only gets to have once in a lifetime, and it’s genuinely wonderful to be part of.

Being part of this shared momentum, whether the final game succeeds or not, will remain an experience we’ve had the privilege to live through, and we sincerely appreciate what we’re seeing so far.
