Hello everyone,

We’ve reached the final article in our series dedicated to the rules of Conquest: The Last Argument of Kings. Today, we’re taking a closer look at the scenarios and the general flow of a game. There’s something truly magical about a miniature wargame that refuses to fall into routine. With Conquest, every battle becomes a unique story, shaped by objectives, reinforcements, deployment… and of course, your army choices. It’s not just a strategy game, thanks to its high replayability, it becomes a narrative that rewrites itself with every match. Don’t forget to check out Chapter 1, Chapter 2, Chapter 3, Chapter 4, Chapter 5, Chapter 6, Chapter 7, Chapter 8, Chapter 9, Chapter 10 and Chapter 11 if you haven’t read them yet.

The first thing that stands out is how much Conquest strives to break the monotony. The game offers several dynamic scenarios, built right into the core rulebook. But it doesn’t stop there: players are also encouraged to create their own custom scenarios! This welcomed freedom is perfect for clubs and gaming communities who love adding their personal touch. Each scenario changes the way the game plays, from reinforcement zones and objectives to victory conditions.

Building an army in Conquest is a strategic and rewarding exercise. Each unit has a points value, reflecting its strength, flexibility, or specialization. A standard game is played at around 2,000 points, which makes for a satisfying evening of gameplay. But there’s nothing stopping you from trying smaller formats to learn the game, or larger ones for truly epic battles.

Every army is composed of Characters and Regiments, all drawn from the same faction. Each Character leads a Warband, with a subtle balance of Mainstay (core) and Restricted (elite) units. This structure brings depth and flexibility to list-building, while maintaining a strong internal balance. The Conquest Companion app is a huge help when putting together your army lists.

In Conquest, terrain isn’t just for show — it has a real impact on gameplay. Terrain placement follows clear rules (no objectives under buildings, minimum distances between pieces, etc.), ensuring the table is both readable and tactical. Special mention goes to Garrison Terrain, which adds an extra layer of strategic and immersive gameplay.

A Closer Look at the Scenarios :

Here’s an overview of the three main scenarios included in the core rulebook :

1. Head to Head

  • Played on a 4’x4′ battlefield.
  • You score points by eliminating enemy units (and the Warlord), as well as through secondary objectives.
  • Perfect for players who enjoy a good straight-up fight!

2. Breakthrough

  • Also on a 4’x4′ battlefield.
  • Objectives are placed in each of the four quarters of the table.
  • Zones closer to you are worth 1 point, while enemy-side zones are worth 2.
  • A fun mechanic for players who enjoy flanking and breakthrough tactics.

3. Maelstrom

  • Played on an expanded 6’x4′ battlefield.
  • Three objectives with different point values depending on their position
  • A more technical scenario, where positioning and reinforcement timing are key.

Each scenario has its own pace, its own priorities, and encourages different playstyles, keeping games fresh and varied.

At the end of each round, you score points based on the objectives you’ve secured. The first player to reach the defined threshold (usually 8 points), or the one with the most after 10 rounds, wins the game. Simple in principle, but demanding in execution, and that’s exactly what makes Conquest so engaging.

What Conquest offers isn’t just a rules system, it’s a flexible narrative framework designed to make every battle your story. Between strategic army building, faction-themed secondary objectives, and diverse scenarios, you get a game that’s rich, vibrant, and endlessly replayable.

We hope this series of articles has made you curious to explore Conquest in greater depth. We’ll be back very soon with new content, this time focused on miniatures, painting, and the game’s expansive universe!
